Richmond, Indiana – Preparations are underway in Richmond for the 9th Annual Meltdown Winter Ice Festival to be held January 25th – 29th, 2022. The free ice festival transforms downtown Richmond into a frozen art gallery as stunning ice carvings line downtown streets and interactive events take place.
Watch the ice creations come alive before your very eyes. On-site carvings by the best ice sculptors in the world, including Richmond’s own Andrew Thistlethwaite, will be busy transforming over 20,000 pounds of ice into jaw-dropping works of art. These works of art are created from solid blocks of ice using chisels, handsaws, chainsaws, and blowtorches.
There’s an array of wintery activities for the whole family to enjoy. The Family Fun Zone gleams with activities and games like ping pong, skee-ball, an ice slide, and a giant throne of ice to sit on for photo ops. Magical Snowflakes on Main guides visitors through a scavenger hunt along Richmond’s Main Street. There will also be a frosty mug pub crawl at local establishments and six live bands playing at various venues downtown.
Friday evening, the family can gather together to watch professional artists create custom ice carvings. A winter-themed movie will be screened at a drive-in movie. Afterward, warm up with an impressive show by local fire dancers.
Saturday night is the main event! The Meltdown Throwdown is an exciting ice carving competition. Watch as two teams of skilled ice carvers battle it out on stage. They will create stunning ice sculptures for a crowd of thousands.
Sculptures will remain on display until they melt.
